Plot Summary

Eagles of the Republic is a 2025 Swedish-French Arabic-language political thriller written and directed by Tarik Saleh, the final installment of his Cairo Trilogy following The Nile Hilton Incident (2017) and Boy from Heaven (2022). Fares Fares stars as George Fahmy, an Egyptian movie star pressured by the country's authorities to lead a prestige film about the country's president. The cast includes Lyna Khoudri, Zineb Triki as Suzanne, Amr Waked as Dr. Mansour, Cherien Dabis, and Sherwan Haji. Cinematography by Pierre Aim, score by Alexandre Desplat, edited by Theis Schmidt, with production design by Roger Rosenberg. Saleh, who is of Swedish-Egyptian descent and based in Sweden, has been an outspoken critic of the el-Sisi government and was forced to leave Egypt before shooting The Nile Hilton Incident. Co-star Amr Waked has also been in exile since 2017. The film had its world premiere in the main competition of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 19, where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or.
