It is spring 1945 on the remote North Sea island of Amrum. Twelve-year-old Nanning spends his days working the farm, hunting seals, and fishing at night to help his family survive. When the war ends, and his mother falls into a deep decline, he sets out across the island to find the simple things she has asked for. What he encounters along the way begins to complicate everything he thought he knew—a coming-of-age story about innocence and what it means to understand your family.
